mysql -u root -p

Will challenge for password.

mysql -u root -p<password>

No space after -p.

The username and password can also be stored in ~/.my.cnf:

[client]
user = root
password = XXXXXXXX

where statements.sql should contain SQL:

SELECT VERSION();
