Procedure

1. Identify the failed disk

The disk number will be the drive’s position in the NAS enclosure from left to right. So if “Disk 2” failed, then it is the second hard drive from the left. Also see:

Synology NAS Concepts | Disk Order

2. Pull the failed disk out, plug the new disk in.

3. Test

Storage Manager → HDD/SSD → Select the disk → S.M.A.R.T. Test → Quick Test

Storage Manager → HDD/SSD → Select the disk → S.M.A.R.T. Test → Extended Test

4. Repair the disk group

Storage Manager → Disk Group

It should say that the Disk Group is degraded.

Manage → Repair → Next → Choose Disk → Select the new disk → Next → All the data in the selected disk will be erased. Are you sure you want to continue? → OK → Apply.

The Disk Group should show "Repairing": Repairing (Checking partition consistency ...%). Eventually it should show "Normal".
