Overview

A variable is also known as an indeterminate.

When the algebraic structure in which the variable appears is considered as an expression, the variable (usually named 'x') is a fixed symbol that does not have any value, hence the "indeterminate" designation. However, when one considers the function defined by the algebraic structure, then 'x' represents the argument of the function, and it is therefore called a 'variable'.
